Business English 2 - Task 1
HUDA KATTAN
Huda Kattan is a self-made millionaire with a beauty
company. She was born on 2
October 1983 in Oklahoma, United States. Growing up with three sisters, Huda
got exposed to beauty trends and fashion early on[1]. The girls would try DIY beauty hacks and apply makeup on
each other. Even though she was passionate about beauty and fashion from a
young age, she chose to study finance at college. She actually studied
finance at the University of Michigan[2]. After graduated she stareted to work for a finance
job at consulting firm Robert Half’s Middle East headquarters. Inclined towards
fashion and makeup from a young age, she decided to do a course at the famous
Joe Blasco makeup school. This course changed her life for the better and led
her to her destiny as a beauty blogger and vlogger.
She started her blog ‘Huda Beauty’ in 2010 and it did not
take her long to become immensely popular[3]. Her[4] identity as an Iraqi
American gave her a unique edge over the other beauty bloggers who were
predominantly of the white race. Young women from the Middle East instantly
took a liking to this raven haired, dark eyed beauty who looked like one among
them. Her blog is undeniably the No.1 blog in the Middle East and is also
tremendously popular in other countries across the world. Motivated by the
resounding success of the blog, Huda Kattan ventured into vlogging as well, and
started posting videos on beauty tips and DIY fashion hacks. The vlog soon
started attracting hordes of young women from all over the world, and as of
March 2020, it had over 3.85 million subscribers. One of her most popular
videos is ‘Why Shaving Your Face is Awesome!’ in which she explains why she
shaves her face to keep her skin smooth and youthful looking. The video has
amassed over 4.6 million views.
As her fame rose, she realized she had been a knack for
understanding what products work best [5]. When she couldn’t find
premium false eyelashes that worked well, she making a decision to start making them herself
[6]. Kattan borrowed $6,000
from her sister Alya and spent another $10,000 from her savings for the
packaging. In 2013, Kattan launched “Huda Beauty” her own line of synthetic and
faux mink lashes, made in Indonesia[7]. She sold out on her first
day and lucked out when Kim Kardashian became a vocal, early fan. Retail sales
hit $1.5 million that first year and jumped to $10 million the next. The
brand’s false lashes are best sellers in the Middle East, and are all set to
conquer the Western beauty markets as well. Then, with the help of her sisters,
the 36-year-old expanded the company with a wide range of products like contour
creams, foundation, and many more. As for now, Huda Beauty has reached the
net worth of $1 billion [8], while her net worth is
estimated to be $560 million as of 2019.
Kattan
has still bigger ambitions. She says she wants to build Huda Beauty into a
conglomerate able to compete with the likes of L’Oreal, Estee Lauder and Coty[9].
